In the past two years, I have been writing on this as I have prepared to become a special education teacher. Some states offer special education teachers the ability to teach immediately after graduating with a bachelor’s degree under the under the supervision of an experienced teacher, with full certification awarded following completion of the teaching program. It bothers me greatly that every teacher at the 15 year mark with my educational degree is paid the same salary…this includes the PE teacher.

The problem revolves around the lack of supports at second level and the lack of teacher training in this speciality area. In a four year degree program, you’ll learn about child development, educational psychology and special education policies. While the deficit of teachers has impacted rural districts hardest, some Lake County school districts have felt the impact, especially in their hunt for special education and bilingual teachers, state data shows. Special education teachers can pursue a master’s degree in special education with an emphasis on teaching children with autism, hearing problems, speech problems, behavioral disorders, traumatic injuries, emotional disturbances or blindness. Writing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) – This is a course that is targeted for teachers and AEA staff who are NEW to the Iowa Web IEP process. Other programs require prospective teachers to take classes in education before they can start to teach. As a special education teacher, one major role (but countless other jobs), is to run a smooth IEP meeting. As a Special Education Teacher, studying the history will make you able to understand how the services related to the field has changed and improved during the past time and even more, perhaps you may be able to guess what might occur in future or invent your own new strategies and methods of teaching students with special education needs.

Special education teachers provide the families of their students the tools they need to grow as independent individuals in their communities. Many universities and colleges offer special education degrees at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level. A fellow teacher brought this Norwegian flag over to my classroom and we had someone take our photo. If you begin your career as a SEN teacher working in a mainstream school, you can become a special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). I say we’re also having this shortage because being a Special Education teacher isn’t for everyone.
